Snyder wins 2-of-3 vs. SW

Sweetwater faced Snyder in three separate District 5 Little League all-star tournament games on Thursday and managed just one win.
The 9-10 year-old all-stars were the lone winner as they beat Snyder, 11-5, to stay alive in the tournament. They will play Clyde in Clyde at 8 p.m. today. If Sweetwater wins, the team will play either Cisco or Abilene Dixie on Saturday.

SW teams win to keep their district hopes alive

All four Sweetwater teams are still chasing District 5 championships after the first three days of their respective double-elimination all-star tournaments.
Two teams stayed alive by winning losers bracket games Wednesday.
Sweetwater’s 9-10 year-olds were a 17-7 winner over Breckenridge, and advance to play Snyder at 7 p.m. to-day in Snyder.
Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-olds were a 2-1 winner over Breckenridge, and advance to play Snyder at 6 p.m. to-day at Wylie.

Bomb Squad is state champs

The Bomb Squad, a local 12-under softball team, won first place at a state tournament held recently in Wichita Falls. Junior stars are only local winners at Abilene

The Junior League (ages 13-14) all-stars were the only Sweetwater team to come away with a win in District 5 Little League action on Tuesday in Abilene.
Sweetwater routed Clyde, 26-1, and will now take on Snyder at 5:45 p.m. Thurs-day at Wylie. Thursday’s winner advances to the semifinals on Saturday.
Sweetwater’s 9-10 year-old all-stars lost, 18-17, to Abilene Cedar Creek in their District 5 opener. The loss means Sweetwater must defeat Breckenridge at 6 p.m. today at Cedar Creek in order to stay alive through the losers bracket of the tournament.

10-11 stars make semis

Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars have been totally dominant through the first two games of the District 5 Little League tournament they are hosting at the Major League field.
After Monday’s 22-0 win over Snyder in its opener, Sweetwater again showed little mercy Tuesday as it shut out Merkel, 12-0, to reach Friday’s semifinals.
Sweetwater will be taking on Wylie, which is also 2-0 in the tournament after an equally convincing 20-1 win over Abilene Southern in Tuesday’s other game.

SW all-star teams start out with wins

Sweetwater went 2-0 on Monday to begin District 5 Little League all-star tour-nament play and advance to the second round.
Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds, who are hosting their tournament at the Major League field, got off to a rousing start by crushing Snyder’s all-stars 22-0. The team plays again at 6 p.m. today against Merkel, where another victory will advance Sweetwater into the tourna-ment semifinals on Friday.
All of the District 5 tournaments are double-elimination. If the 10-11-year-olds lose today, they must beat Clyde at 8 p.m. in the losers bracket on Thursday to stay alive.

Students attend Mustang Tennis Clinic

Students received instruction this past week at a Mustang Tennis Clinic that was held at the high school courts. Sweetwater coaches Shella Arnwine, Christi Adams and Coby Hamlin taught the clinic, which was intended for students who have completed grades 3-8, with the help of some of their high school players.

Local grid teams get little preseason love

Nolan County’s four high school football teams will all have something to prove, at least to one well-known statewide publication, when they take to the gridiron for the 2011 season.
At least one school has represented the county in the playoffs for the past 21 years, but Texas Football — Dave Campbell’s legendary magazine — predicts that Sweetwater, Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell will all miss the postseason.

Lady Stangs named all-BC

Junior Alicia Finn and sophomore Kelsi Crosson of Sweetwater were named on Sunday to the 2011 All-Big Country Softball Team by the Abilene Reporter-News.Finn was chosen as a starting infielder after hitting .655 in district play with six doubles, three triples and one homer, while Crosson was selected as a starting outfielder after batting .545 with six doubles, two triples, six stolen bases and a .697 on-base percentage.
Kelsi Crosson earned All-Big Country recognition as a reserve outfielder follow-ing her freshman year.
