SW girls tied for 3rd in district after winning at Monahans; ‘Stangs lose

January 30, 2013

MONAHANS — The Sweetwater girls basketball team did what it had to do Tuesday in order to keep its playoff hopes alive this season as it went to Monahans and won, 54-43, to snap a three-game losing streak.
The win for Sweetwater (18-13, 4-4 district) came in its final road game of the year and, coupled with Big Spring’s 60-24 loss to first-place Wylie on Tuesday, moved Sweetwater into a third-place tie in District 4-3A with the Lady Steers.

SW teams must beat Monahans to keep playoff hopes in 4-3A

January 29, 2013

Sweetwater’s basketball teams may well have to win at Monahans today in order to hold on to any realistic hopes of a District 4-3A playoff berth.
That’s certainly true for the Sweetwater boys (1-4), who are two games behind Monahans (3-2), which is currently in third place.
But the Sweetwater girls (3-4) also need a win as they trail Big Spring (4-3) by a game for the No. 3 spot after losing three straight. They face a Monahans team that is 0-7, and Sweetwater probably has to win tonight and at home this Friday against 1-6 Snyder to have a realistic shot of getting to the playoffs.

JV girls now 21-0 with just 3 games remaining on this year’s schedule

January 29, 2013

Sweetwater’s junior varsi-ty girls will be 21-0 when they go to Monahans today.
Sweetwater (7-0 in dis-trict) needs three more wins to have a perfect season after rolling to a 47-5 win at Greenwood Friday. Shaneese Brown and Abby McPherson had 10 points while Cierra Knox and Morgan Whitley had eight, Maddie Jones five, Jasmine Reddic four and Jaya Adkins and Nisha Williams one. Sweetwater led 29-1 at halftime and 40-3 after three periods of play.

JV boys get their 1st victory

January 28, 2013

The Sweetwater junior varsity boys basketball team finally got up its first win Friday with a 46-45 victory at Midland Greenwood.
Jonathan Browning had a team-high 13 points and Marquees Jenkins 10 for the Mustangs, who won for the first time in 13 games this season and are 1-4 in district play.
Colton Belew had eight points, Trey Taylor and Deshaun Williams seven and Matthew Trevino one.
The freshman boys, how-ever, fell to 6-4 for the sea-son and are still winless in district play after losing to Midland Greenwood 51-43.
