Poe’s pitching silences G’wood

GREENWOOD — They haven’t been dominant lately, but Sweetwater High School’s baseball team is winning the close games — by getting clutch hits along with some great pitching.
Tuesday’s 1-0 road vic-ory at Midland Greenwood — keeping Sweetwater in a first-place tie with Wylie at 5-1 — was the Mustangs’ second straight one-run win and third in district play.

Lady ‘Stangs stay in 2nd with dominating victory

GREENWOOD — After dropping out of first place with a 10-0 loss to Snyder, Sweetwater’s softball team got back on track Tuesday by getting 17 hits and scoring 11 runs in the last two innings of a 13-3, run-rule win at Midland Greenwood.
Sweetwater (5-2) stayed a game behind Snyder, which improved to 6-1 in district with an 8-1 win over Big Spring (4-3). Sweetwater, which is closing in on a second straight playoff berth, will play host Friday to Big Spring at 5 p.m.

SHS teams resume playoff chase at Greenwood

Halfway to the playoffs.
If the season ended today, Sweetwater High School’s baseball and softball teams would be in the postseason.
But they’re not there yet.
However, the SHS base-ball team is tied for first place at the midpoint of dis-trict and can get even closer to a playoff berth today if the Mustangs (4-1 in district) win at Greenwood (1-4) today. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Sweetwater netters have four wins at 4-3A tourney

Sweetwater had a total of four match wins Friday at the District 4-3A tennis tournament that was held at Big Spring.
First-round winners were Isaiah Hernandez in boys singles, Bax-Vause in boys doubles and Jenny Medellin and Kristen Casto in girls doubles before they lost in the second round.
Hernandez defeated a Snyder player 7-5, 6-3 while Bax and Vause won 6-1, 6-2 over Greenwood. Medellin won 3-6, 6-2 (10-8) vs. Snyder, and Casto won 6-1, 6-0 vs. Monahans.

Girls golfers 3rd at district

The Sweetwater girls golf team moved up one spot to third place Saturday during the second leg of the district golf tournament held at Sweetwater Country Club.
Sweetwater shot 371 for a 759 total as it moved past Wylie, which shot 390-775.
But going into today’s third and final leg of the district tournament at Green-wood, Sweetwater is faced with a near-insurmountable task of grabbing one of the top two spots and earning a trip to regionals, as it trails second-place Monahans (673) by 86 strokes.
Big Spring leads with a 662 total.

Allen makes Super Team

Highland’s Sierra Allen was named the “Sixth Man” on the Abilene Reporter-News’ All-Big Country girls basketball Super Team that was announced Sunday.
Allen led Highland to its first-ever girls appearance in the state tournament be-fore losing to No. 1 Saltillo in the semifinals. The 6-1 junior post averaged 19.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and two blocks a game and shot 53 percent from the field, and was District 13-1A, Division II’s MVP.

Mustangs hold off Snyder to remain tied for 1st in district

SNYDER — After prod-ucing 30 runs over its last three games, Sweetwater’s offense was held in check by Snyder pitcher Taylor Munkres on Friday.
Fortunately, Sweetwater’s James Clift was doing just as well for the Mustangs as he got the pitching win in a 3-2 victory over the Tigers.
