Nolan County’s three high school football teams outside Sweetwater all came up with impressive wins Friday. ROSCOE — Roscoe also celebrated its homecoming in addition to the 41-point win, which evens the Plow-boys’ season record at 2-2.

Roscoe begins district today

September 27, 2013

While Sweetwater has one more game plus an open date and Blackwell and Highland are a month away, Roscoe officially begins its “second season” today when the Plowboys host Baird in their District 7-1A, Division II opener at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe went 1-2 in non-district under new coach Jake Freeman, but a win tonight would equal its victory total for all of last year. One of the Plowboys’ two wins a year ago was in their district opener with Baird as Roscoe prevailed 14-0.
Freeman said getting a win tonight is important.

Serving it up

Bryan Vause gets ready to hit a serve for Sweet-water in his recent boys doubles match.
Vause, a senior, not only plays No. 1 doubles but is also the No. 1 boys singles player on the team, which plays again at Midland Green-wood on Saturday.

SW ends non-district vs. Lions

September 26, 2013

They are two of the winningest programs in the history of Texas. One has seven state championships to its credit, while the other has perhaps the most unique setting for a high school football game in the state.
And even if the 2013 ver-sions don’t exactly resemble some of their powerhouse teams of the past, Sweet-water (2-2) and Brownwood (1-3) should put on an enter-taining show this Friday at Mustang Bowl.
Both are scoring a lot of points and, perhaps just as significantly, they are giving up a lot. Sweetwater has allowed 152 points so far, while Brownwood has been shredded for 207.

Plowboys to start district against Baird

September 26, 2013

After taking a week off, Roscoe starts district play by hosting Baird on Friday and hopes to get its up-and-down season back on track.
The Plowboys (1-2) have shown an explosive offense on occasion, but lost 19-0 two weeks ago to Miles in their most recent outing.
Baird is off to an 0-3 start this season, but two of its losses have been by a total of eight points.
Roscoe coach Jake Free-man said last week’s open date “came at the perfect time” for the Plowboys, in part because it allowed his team to heal injuries to some key players in getting ready for Baird.

Blackwell faces tough road game; Highland seeks 2nd straight W

September 26, 2013

With their annual show-down still two weeks away, Nolan County’s two six-man schools are both coming off wins as they take to the road this Friday.
It’s become a familiar feeling for Blackwell, which is off to a 4-0 start after last week’s 45-0 rout of Trent. But the Hornets, who are ranked No. 11 in the state in Division II Six-Man, could face their big-gest challenge yet. Blanket is 3-1 and ranked No. 15, and may have a little extra motivation after suffering a 52-6 loss to May, which is currently ranked No. 7 in Six-Man Division I.
