April 16, 2013

Dear Editor,
We would like to express our sincerest and deepest gratitude for the outpouring of food, monetary support and uplifting thoughts and prayers during our time of great sorrow and loss. It is during those times we realize how truly blessed we are to be incorporated into such a great circle of family and friends. May God bless the lives of each and every one of you.

Who’s really to blame for high poverty rates?

April 16, 2013

Recently I heard someone reporting that according to recent figures, one in five American children lives in poverty. Well, so much for winning the war on poverty. I wonder how many trillions of dollars we have wasted (and are still wasting) funding federal programs and their legions of drone bureaucrats, in order to lose the war on poverty.

It only takes a spark

When I was growing up, summer meant a pilgrimage to Moran for an extended visit with my maternal grandparents. Most of the year, we lived in a suburb of Cincinnati, with the conveniences of urban living – including garbage pickup. While Moran called itself a city (and still does, I believe) at least at that time, there was no provision for garbage disposal. My grandparents had a large concrete structure in the back yard, which resembled nothing as much as an immense beehive.

It’s a gamble

Different groups, from scouts to schools to fire departments and clubs have raised money through raffles and drawings for years. Periodically, someone becomes involved in whatever group governs them who questions whether or not these drawings are legal. Invariably, that results in a call to either the County or District attorney - - and the answer received is not always appreciated!

Hello Sweetwater

April 3, 2013

As I was growing up in the ‘60s, I was very happy when I got my first job at the Sweetwater Reporter as a route carrier. My mom was raising us kids and the money didn’t get around very far, but with me having a job, I had planned to contribute to the family and hopefully make life better for all.

I can’t remember, is this car AC, or DC?

Something that happened recently, which I thought was pretty notable, was The Barack’s limousine, nicknamed “The Beast” (which I find very appropriate), breaking down in Israel. Truthfully, other than when this same car, or maybe one of its look alike copies was stuck on a sharply angled drive sometime back, I hadn’t given the Presidential limo a lot of thought.

A lost concept?

CNN on line recently ran an article concerning two World War II pilots. One had been returning to base in a badly torn B-17, his crew injured, dead and dying. The other was a German fighter pilot who saw the wounded aircraft and went after it. When he realized the condition of the crew, he took a protective stance and saw the Allied craft safe from German ground fire until close to safety – despite the fact that one more “kill” would have made him an ace.

Letter to the Editor: 3-24-13

Dear Editor,
There is an old saying, "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it." I escaped from the madness and turmoil of the oil boom in Midland and moved to Sweetwater on Nov. 8, 2012. I wanted a place to live where the pace of life was slow and easy. My father and grandfather are buried in the Sweetwater Cemetery and that is where I will be buried when the Lord calls me home. I found a nice community where people are friendly, etc.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,
I heard on a commercial that an auto maker was going to install a laptop computer in one of their cars. Now what kind of sense does that make when states are making it illegal to talk or text on your cell phone. I guess they think that operation a computer while driving will not distract you like operating a cell phone does. Now I have heard about the dumbest thing lately with this idea. Hey you cannot talk or text but it's ok to operate a computer.
