Grand Jury indicts 15

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 15 people this past week. Ten of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Michael Ray Smith was indicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony. According to court documents, Smith threatened his victim with imminent bodily injury by trying to stab the victim with a knife. His bond was set at $20,000.
Ittticha Kay Taylor was indicted for family violence assault, a third degree felony. According to court documents, Taylor hit her victim in the nose. Her bond was set at $12,000.

Driver identified in fatal wreck

One person was killed in a one vehicle crash in Nolan County on Monday.  The crash occurred at 8:53 p.m. on Interstate 20 westbound lane near mile marker 237.
Mensur Osmic, 54 years of age from Phoenix, Ariz. was  driving a 1999 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer westbound on Interstate 20 at mile marker 237 in Nolan County. Osmic failed to negotiate a curve, struck a guardrail and concrete retaining wall. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Fambrough. The body was taken to McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

Mobile office hours event hosted by office of Congressman Neugebauer

On Tuesday morning, the office of Congressman Randy Neugebauer hosted Mobile Office Hours at the Roscoe City Hall.
Although Congressman Neugebauer has permanent offices in Abilene, Big Spring and Lubbock, the event gives citizens an opportunity to meet with his staff in a nearby, local setting. Attendees are able to share ideas, concerns and feedback in regards to problems with a particular federal agency or issues affecting District 19, such as the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), veterans' benefits or social security concerns.

McDonald’s hiring event continues

McDonald's of Sweetwater hosted an all day hiring day event held at the Holiday Inn Express on Tuesday and the event will continue today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested in applying for a job can go by the event and fill out an application. They will also be holding on-site interviews.

David "Jets" Gonzales

June 19, 2013

A graveside service for David "Jets" Gonzales, 50, of Sweetwater, will be at 10 a.m., on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Hermleigh Cemetery with Father Roy Badilles officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday at McCoy Funeral Home.
Gonzales died Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Sweetwater.

Truck wrecks into US 84/I-20 bridge under construction

Both westbound lanes of Interstate 20 at the US 84 overpass under construction in Nolan County are currently closed due to an overnight wreck. The westbound main lanes of I-20 remain closed for law enforcement to continue their investigation of the crash.
The driver of an 18-wheeler wrecked into the side of the overpass on Monday night and died at the scene. According to emergency authorities, it took about an hour to get the driver out of the truck and many rescue tools were used in the process. Members of the Sweetwater Fire Department and Roscoe Fire Department assisted in the recovery.

The winners of the Chip Off The Ol' Block contest, sponsored by the Sweetwater Reporter, were Nathan and Kamryn Wiltse.
In honor of Father's Day, Wiltse won a prize package from Higginbotham, Just Cuts and Buck's Steaks and Bar-B-Que.

Texas confirms first West Nile case of the season

The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed the state’s first case of West Nile illness of the season. DSHS is urging people to take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness.
West Nile illness was confirmed in an adult male from Anderson County. The patient is recovering from the neuroinvasive form of the disease. Additional details about the patient are not being released to protect the patient’s identity.

Villa honored by SFSA

Jerren Villa (fourth from right), a recent Sweetwater High School graduate, is shown here receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the Sweetwater Fastpitch Softball Association.

Villa was a first team all-district infielder this past season for the SHS softball team, which won its first playoff game in school history and advanced to the Class 3A area playoffs.
