Play at the annual Wood Bat Classic in Sweetwater began today and continues through Saturday at Sports-man Park with a new name â the West Bishop Wood Bat Classic â as a way to honor the former director of physical therapy at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, who died this past October.
Bishop, a native of Sny-der and a member of Sny-derâs Athletic Hall of Hon-or, was very active in youth sports while at Sweetwater and instrumental in the renovation of Sweetwater High Schoolâs baseball field. He was also coached youth baseball for 20 years.
SAN ANGELO â Sweet-water High Schoolâs softball team rallied twice from four-run deficits and once from three runs down Tuesday to tie San Angelo Lake View, only to see the hosts score in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 12-11 victory.
Sweetwater (6-3) never led, but kept the pressure on with a three-run third inning to tie it 3-3, a four-run fifth to tie it at 7-7 and finally a four-run seventh to tie it once again, 11-11.
âIâm very proud of the way we fought back into the game,â Lady Mustang coach Tony Heredia said of his teamâs effort.
Sweetwater High School will be hosting its annual Rattlesnake Relays track meet on Friday.
Field events will begin at 2:45 p.m. at the SHS track field, followed by running finals which will start about 5 p.m. or 30 minutes after the field events end.
Michael Hunt tied for eighth place among all of the medalists who played in the Region I-3A preview held at Lubbockâs Shadow Hills Golf Course recently. Hunt shot 80 in his open-ing round, then finished with a flourish as he shaved off seven strokes on Satur-day to finish at 153.
Also playing two rounds for Sweetwater was Mark Lawrence, who shot rounds of 92 and 93 for a 185 total. Also playing in the final round for Sweetwater were Mason Andrews (79), Mich-ael Hazard (85) and Jeremy Witt (98) as the Mustangs had a team score of 330 on Saturday.
Sweetwater High School's track teams competed at the Long Sleeve Relays in Hamlin to begin their season last Friday.
11:17 a.m., The suspect has been identified as Roger Davidson.
11:07 a.m., The suspect is now in custody of local law enforcement.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office, Sweetwater Police Department and Department of Public Safety are currently involved in an on-foot chase of a male individual near the TSTC West Texas - Sweetwater campus.
Also involved in the search are canine units and a helicopter.

Several AVID students attended the January school board meeting and thanked the board members for their service.
AVID t-shirts and thank you letters were presented to each member. The AVID teacher/coach is Christie Adams.
Progress continues toward the county project to obtain grant funding from TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation), as approval was given on two items at Monday's county commissioners' meeting.
The first action item approved was the recommendation of the advisory board for the Nolan County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone #1 regarding the application to TxDOT. The advisory board is made up of Tom Oliver, Carter Scott, Mark Morrow, Jason Freeman and Rick Alley.
Martha Lucille (Mama Lucy) Hall, age 102, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Garden of Memories with Dr. Fred Meeks officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
