Round-Up for Rehab slated for next week

Cowboy poet/musician Red Steagall is the Honorary Chairman for Round-Up for Rehab. He will be in Sweetwater for this year’s Shrimp Peel and Auction on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Sweetwater Country Club. The public is invited to attend and meet Red personally at the event that raises much needed dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center.

Light Crust Doughboys perform at meet and greet event

Members of the Light Crust Doughboys jam for a small crowd Monday evening after performing at Sweetwater Intermediate School during the day. The Grammy-winning band will be back in Sweetwater Nov. 1 for a concert at the Municipal Auditorium.

Elvira Carrion Cantu

Elvira Carrion Cantu, 68, of Sweetwater, has gone to be with the Lord. Vera, as she was known, passed away at Hendrick Medical Center of Abilene on Sunday afternoon after a lengthy illness. Local arrangements were handled by Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street in Abilene, Texas and a Memorial Service to honor her will be at Lighthouse Assembly of God in Sweetwater, Texas at a later date.

JV spikers win again; freshmen fall

Sweetwater’s JV is now 6-0 in district volleyball after a 25-19, 25-18 win over Levelland, but the freshman team lost 16-25, 17-25.

Tetanus: Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department monthly focus on diseases

Tetanus (lockjaw) is a serious disease that causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead to "locking" of the jaw so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus leads to death in about 1 in 10 cases. Several vaccines are used to prevent tetanus among children, adolescents and adults including DTaP, Tdap, DT, and Td.

Volunteers sought for Pumpkins on the Porch event

The Pioneer Museum is gearing up for the annual Pumpkins on the Porch, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25.
According to museum director Melonnie Hicks, additional volunteers are needed this year. To assist in Pumpkins on the Porch, contact Hicks at 236-0066.

TSTC to host culinary class

Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater will host a culinary class from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Culinary Classroom. The cost of the class is $35. The class is entitled, "Soup Trade Secrets from Chef Kayleen and Chef Brin."
