Man found guilty of kidnapping

Several have recently entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
Sylvester Ramon pleaded no contest to kidnapping, a third degree felony. The incident occurred on Oct. 8, 2011 and he was found guilty by the court. He was sentenced to two years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will also have to pay a $500 fine and $348 in court costs. He will receive 230 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.

TSTC fall registration underway

Students are registering for the fall semester at Texas State Technical College. TSTC offers affordable, accelerated training for in-demand careers and TSTC Career Services provides assistance with resumes, interview skills and career placement. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 73% of jobs require an Associate’s degree or less, while only 27% require a Bachelor’s degree or more. 

Renewal period for SHS option holders set to continue

Current option holders have until Friday, Aug. 22 to renew reserved season football tickets to Sweetwater High School home games for the 2014 season.
Tickets may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD ad-ministration office on 207 Musgrove and are good for five home games — on Aug. 29 against Lubbock High, on Sept. 12 against Breckenridge (Sweetwater homecoming), on Sept. 19 against Snyder, on Oct. 24 against Monahans and on Nov. 7 against Lamesa.

Local events for the weekend

Several events are lined up on Saturday, Aug. 9. The Roscoe Community Center will be hosting their second Saturday of the month Trade Days/Flea Market from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Roscoe Community Center, located on the corner of Bois D’Arc and Broadway.
There will be numerous vendor booths, flea market booths and concession stands serving breakfast and lunch items. If you would like a booth, or need more information, contact Connie at 766-3433 or 338-1287.

Today will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 101. Winds will be from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph, and after 4 p.m. we'll have a 10% chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Those rain chance will remain until around 7 p.m. tonight. Otherwise, we'll see partly cloudy skies, with a low around 75 and southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph.
For the weekend, we'll have highs in the upper 90s with lows in the mid 70s. Winds will vary from 5 to 15 mph.

Betty Lou Jones, 84, longtime Seminole resident, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 at her home in Seminole.
Betty was born April 18, 1930 in Jefferson County near Addington, Okla. to Betsy (McDaniel) and Irving Davis.

Texas game wardens tapped to patrol Rio Grande

The U.S.-Mexico border spans more than 1,900 miles, with the brunt of the length — more than 1,200 miles — spanning south Texas.
As concerns about illegal immigration grow, Texas Governor Rick Perry has deployed the Army National Guard, Department of Public Safety officers and state game wardens to assist the Border Patrol in deterring immigrants from crossing the Rio Grande and cracking down on the smugglers who often assist them.
Nolan County Game Warden Jake Simmering spent a week on the front lines of the border war in June, working in Hidalgo, a small town near McAllen.

WTC and Texas A&M partner in developing a new degree path for students at Roscoe Collegiate High School

Western Texas College and Texas A&M University are working together to initiate a new degree path for students at Roscoe Collegiate High School. Representatives from all three schools met recently to discuss the details of this new venture. From Texas A&M, Dr. Glenn Shinn, Dr. Buddy Faries, Dr. Elizabeth Crouch, Dr. Darrell Dromgoole and Dr. Gary Briers.
Roy Bartels represented Western Texas College and Dr. Kim Alexander from Roscoe Collegiate High School.

County conservation partners to host local work group meeting

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nolan Soil and Water Conservation District cordially invite the public to attend their 2014 Local Working Group (LWG) meeting on Monday, Aug. 11, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
The purpose of this annual LWG meeting is to set local conservation priorities and bring conservation stakeholders together to discuss conservation topics and issues relevant to helping Nolan County farmers and ranchers better conserve on-farm natural resources.

Sweetwater ISD hosts Chamber Coffee

Sweetwater Independent School District hosted the monthly Chamber Coffee on Wednesday at the Sweetwater High School library. Many members of the community attended the event and listened to speakers Dr. Ronald Morris, SHS principal an Congressman Randy Neugebauer.
