Nolan County students to host Fields of Faith event

Students from Nolan County will be joining thousands of other youth on athletic fields all across the nation on Wednesday, Oct. 8, to share their Christian faith with fellow students during the ninth annual national Fields of Faith event. This rapidly-growing, interdenominational outreach event will be held at more than 450 locations throughout the nation on this same date.
The doors will open up at 6:30 p.m. at Mustang Bowl. The event will officially start at 7 p.m.

Highland ISD Homecoming 2014 planned this weekend

Highland Homecoming will be Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11. Friday’s activities start at 6 p.m. with flag football and basketball for the alumni. Seniors will provide a concession and bonfire begins at dusk.

Joe Ishmel Cotherman

Services for Joe Ishmel Cotherman, 86, of Sweetwater will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Keith Clower officiating. Interment will follow at Shep Cemetery in Taylor County with military graveside rites under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Monday evening, Oct. 6, 2014 at McCoy Funeral Home.
He died on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.

Today, October 6, the bi-monthly meeting at the Maryneal Community Center will be held at 7 p.m., which will be Candidate Night. Any local candidates are welcome to attend.
Also, the Big Country Dance, featuring live music by Dusty Creek Band will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.

Talented Sweetwater trio hopes for second 5-0 run

Sweetwater’s 2014 football season is only half over and the games that really count don’t begin until Friday, when it starts Dis-trict 2-4A, Division II play at Fort Stockton.
But after finishing 4-6 the last four years and missing the playoffs the last five, the Mustangs have blazed their way to a heady 5-0 start this season, capped by the team’s impressive 62-48 win over previously-unbeaten Andrews on the road.

S’water pounds Lamesa for 2nd 2-4A win

LAMESA — Following a heartbreaking loss at home to Levelland three days ear-lier, the Sweetwater High School volleyball team went to Lamesa and swept the host Tornadoes in three games on Friday night.

Highland stuns No. 6 SC; Blackwell tops VB

October 6, 2014

Nolan County’s two six-man football teams both won on the road Friday. Highland (2-3) knocked off No. 6-ranked Sterling City for its first on-field win of the year, while Blackwell (3-3) overcame a one-point deficit at halftime to post a 21-point win at Veribest.

David Alvarado

October 4, 2014

David Alvarado, age 55, of Sweetwater, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
As per his wishes, his body was cremated. A private graveside was held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at Sweetwater Cemetery. Burial followed.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
David was born on May 8, 1959 in Sweetwater to Regino and Rosa (Ovalle) Alvarado. He was a member of the Calvario Baptisto Church.
