Chamber welcomes Year Round Yard Sale

Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and many members of the community showed their support for the newest Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce member, Year Round Yard Sale, on Friday, July 6, 2012, with a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the business at 710 Lamar Street. Store owners are Temy Teel and Bobbie Dunn.

Mustang season ticket renewal begins July 9

Reserved season tickets for the 2012 football season will be up for renewal to current option holders beginning Monday, July 9 through Friday, Aug. 3.
Tickets are $30 for five home games and may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD administration office. Reserved ticket sales for the general public go on sale on Monday, Aug. 6 during regular business hours and continue through Friday, Aug. 24. Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday. For more information, call the administration office at 235-8601, ext. 116.

TSTC graduate, employee wins Women in Wind Energy scholarship

Griselda Sanchez, Enrollment Advisor for the Wind Energy program at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater had the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge about the wind industry thanks to the Sweetwater Chapter of the Women in Wind Energy.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 59 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on July 5, 2012.

The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 400 block of W. New Mexico.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 400 block of Bradford.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of Locust.
• Theft — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Assault — 800 block of Lubbock.

Arrested by SPD:
• Ittticha Kay Taylor, 29 — City warrants.
• Richard Hopkins, 44 — Family violence assault.

Joy Blauvelt to speak at Sweetwater Aglow

Aglow International Sweetwater Community Lighthouse will host their monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 300 SE Georgia Avenue. Guest speaker will be Joy Blauvelt from Colorado City. Joy loves to see people set free to serve God. Joy and her husband David are on the praise team at Christian Fellowship Church in Colorado City. Joy is the President of the Aglow Lighthouse in Colorado City. The joy of the Lord is manifest in Joy's life and ministry.

Roscoe to host fireworks show

A weekend event will be planned in Roscoe. Area residents are once again invited to join in the festivities “On The Bricks” in historic downtown Roscoe to celebrate our great nation on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

Nolan County Extension Office to host babysitting camp

July 6, 2012

A Babysitting Camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Texas State Technical College activity center.
Those attending can get ideas for food, games and activities to do with the kids they are babysitting, which will be housed in a notebook that the participant gets to take home along with many other great ideas for babysitting. There will also be CPR Certification available and demonstration of first aid techniques.
Cost for the camp is $50 for students ages 13-18 years of age only.

Watermelon time at RPMH

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital offered free watermelon to the community on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, to celebrate Independence Day.
Also given were small flags and patriotic footballs. Many showed up for the event and enjoyed the treats and company of others on the holiday.

Summer travelers find average gas price four cents lower

When motorists return home from 4th of July trips this week they’ll be paying less at the pumps to do so. The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Lone Star State is now $3.16, which is four cents less than last week and 18 cents less than the national average of $3.34. Drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.27 and motorists in Beaumont are paying the least at $3.09. Drivers in Sweetwater are paying an average of $3.17.

The SPD received 47, 911 calls.

• Family violence assault — 1100 block of James.
• Burglary of a habitation— 100 block of Fisher.

Arrested by SPD:
• Billy McQueen, 24 — Assault causes bodily injury.
• Justin Strouse, 25 — Public intoxication.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on July 4, 2012.
