Thurman Randall "T.R." Hayes

Graveside services for Thurman Randall "T.R." Hayes, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, with Rev. Keith Clower and Rev. James Baker officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Hayes died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at his residence.

Two residents recognized for Relay efforts

The America Cancer Society would like to say a special thank you to all of those that braved the West Texas wind to come out and support the 10th annual Nolan and Scurry County Relay For Life. The event kicked off with almost 30 cancer survivors taking to the track for a victory lap. Their caregivers met them half-way and completed the lap hand-in-hand with their survivors. At dusk, the track was lined with hundreds of lit luminaria bags to honor those that have fought cancer and to remember those that lost their battles.

Lamar Street Baptist Church invites families to Babylon

A summer family event called Babylon: Daniel’s Courage in Captivity will be hosted at Lamar Street Baptist Church from Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22, for children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade.

VA announces recruitment effort to hire mental health professionals

BIG SPRING, TX – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has developed an aggressive national mental health hiring initiative to improve recruitment and hiring, marketing, education and training programs and retention efforts for mental health professionals.

Cancer Services Network workshop planned for June 19

Cancer Services Network (CSN) plans to broadcast CancerCare’s Connect® Workshop Part III of Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Though and Beyond Cancer. This workshop entitled Changing Roles and Responsibilities for Caregivers is scheduled on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from noon to 1:30 p.m. This session is for cancer survivors, their families and friends. Information will be shared to help them cope with concerns that arise after treatment.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued eight citations and made five arrests on June 14, 2012.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1200 block of Towncreek.
• Harassment — 700 block of W. Sixth.
• Narcotics — 200 block of E. Fourth.

Arrested by SPD:
• Little Johnny Gutierrez, 33 — Warrant.
• Cresencio Ruiz, 58 — Public intoxication.
• Gilbert Aguilar, 20 — Possession of marijuana/possession of dangerous drug.
• Alfred Arnold, 38 — Possession of marijuana/possession of controlled substance.

Roscoe Elementary Basketball Camp:

C-City to host night golf tourney, steak cookout June 30

The Colorado City Rotary Club hosts its eighth annual Pat Taylor Memorial Night Golf Tournament and Steak Cookout June 30 at Colorado City’s Wolf Creek Golf Links. The entry fee for the four-person ABCD scramble will be $60 per person and includes a steak dinner for players only. Additional dinners may be purchased for $10 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.
Cart fees are not included in the entry fee. The number of carts are limited so players are encouraged to reserve early.

Roscoe Plowboy football campers

These students posed for a group picture on the final day of the two-day Roscoe Plowboy Football Camp held last week in Roscoe. The camp for students entering grades 2-9 was taught by Roscoe head coach Jonathan Haseloff and members of Roscoe’s football coaching staff.

Mustang baseball campers

June 18, 2012

A pair of Mustang Baseball Camps were held this past week at Sweetwater High School’s baseball field which is located just south of Nolan County Coliseum.
The first session (shown) had campers entering grades 1-5 next school year while the campers in the second session was for campers entering grades 6-9 next school year. Both of the camps were taught by Sweetwater head baseball coach Roland Herrera and members of the Mustang staff.
