SHS students selected to attend RYLA camp

Four junior students from Sweetwater High School have been selected to attend RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp this summer at the Lone Tree Ranch near Capitan, New Mexico.
Sweetwater representatives will be Jeremy Witt, Abigail McPherson, Madison Jones and Blake Cumbie. Camp RYLA assists students in problem solving, conflict management and learning effective leadership.

Hunt is RQ

Michael Hunt of Sweet-water will make his first trip to regionals next week after shooting his best round of the District 4-3A golf tour-nament Tuesday while play-ing on his home course.
After shooting 77s in the first two rounds of the tour-nament, Hunt carded a 74 in his final round — which was played at Sweetwater Country Club — to finish fourth among district medalists with a 228 total.

Mustangs win 5-1, end 3-game skid

A great pitching effort and timely hitting Tuesday allowed Sweetwater to end its three-game losing streak by beating Midland Green-wood, 5-1, here Tuesday.
Sweetwater (3-3, 16-6) solidified its sagging playoff hopes out of District 4-3A by moving within a game of Snyder and Big Spring, who are both 4-2 and tied for second place after the Steers — once 0-2 — won their fourth straight Tuesday by beating the Tigers, 9-5. The Mustangs also moved ahead of Monahans (2-4), which lost 14-4 Tuesday to first-place Wylie, which is 5-1.

Lady ‘Stangs lose wild one to Rangerettes

Enjoying a 7-5 lead after five innings, the Sweetwater Lady Mustang softball team seemed headed for its first district win of the season when it faced second-place Midland Greenwood here Tuesday. But Greenwood ruined the celebration with a 10-run assault in the last two innings to beat Sweet-water, 15-11.
Greenwood which trails first-place Snyder by two games, improved to 5-2 in district play and 12-12 over-all. Sweetwater, despite by far its highest-scoring game in district play so far, fell to 0-7 and 9-13.

Checks presented to WTBRA

The West Texas Barrel Racing Association was presented with $2,500 checks from both the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Nolan County Coliseum Board during the WTBRA's Extravaganza held this past weekend at the coliseum.
Presenting the checks were Kirk Maberry (left), representing the coliseum board and the Chamber, and Jeff Howard (far right), manager of the coliseum. Among those pictured from the WTBRA are president Jenny Bufkin, awards director Amanda Maxfield, vice president GiGi Robinson and secretary Laura Johnson.

Update: Sweetwater 2020 meeting rescheduled to next week

Update: The next Sweetwater 2020 meeting will be next Tuesday, April 15 (rescheduled from tonight due to schedule conflicts at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex, auditorium etc. The April 15 meeting will be at the classrooms at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (enter through the admissions area near the Emergency Room) from 6-8 pm.

Child Abuse Awareness Banquet tonight, Family FunFair tomorrow

The West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center is fast approaching their Annual Child Abuse Awareness Banquet. This year the banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex and will have a guest speaker. Each year the WTCAC hosts the Child Abuse Awareness Banquet in an effort to raise the funds needed to support child abuse victims in the counties of Nolan, Scurry, Mitchell, Fisher and Borden.

Don Leland Brock

Don Leland Brock, 84, of Sweetwater, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. His wishes were to be cremated and buried in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas. No further services are planned.
He was born Oct. 17, 1929, in Sweetwater. He married Marie Rosseau on Oct. 1, 1954, in Lovington, New Mexico. He was a member and past Master of Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571. Don was the warehouse superintendent for Domtar Gypsum for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
