RELIGION: Check out the 2012 Co-Ed Sweetwater Church Softball League

August 31, 2012

BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH
Americans are a people of spectators. We sit and watch ball games, television programs and movies. This mind set has slipped into our churches where we hire pastors and staff and then show up on Sunday morning, sit with arms folded, and say, “Okay, show me what you got!” It’s like the family that visited the church and then at home the dad said, “The preacher was too boring.” The mom said, “The music was too loud.” The teenager said, “The youth were snobs,” but the little boy said, “I thought it was a pretty good show for a quarter.”

Bearcats run to 38-6 victory over Plowboys

August 31, 2012

A 38-6 season-opening loss to De Leon on Thursday at the Sammy Baugh Classic wasn’t what Roscoe was hoping for. But head coach Jonathan Haseloff still saw encouraging signs for his team, which is coming off an 0-10 season.
“I’m pleased with the way our kids performed for three quarters,” he said of his Plowboys, who trailed just 18-6 at halftime. “But when we came out in the second half we just made some awful boo-boos, being young, and we’ve got to stop doing that. But I thought we did some things well and a lot of our young kids really stepped up.”

Texas law enforcement working overtime during annual DWI crackdown

August 30, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas — During the Labor Day holiday period alcohol-related crashes killed fewer people in Texas last year than in any year since 2003.
But, state officials don't want this lower number to put Texans at ease. Law enforcement will still work thousands of overtime hours this month to crack down on drinking and driving during the holiday. The Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) "Drink. Drive. Go to Jail." campaign begins August 17 and runs through Labor Day.
