The Roscoe boys basket-ball team began its 2012-13 season with a 60-24 loss at Hawley on Tuesday.
Javier Leanos paced Roscoe with 12 points. Brant Burnett had three points, Esteban Benivamondez, Dillon Freeman, Luke Rov-ig and Shelton Toliver two and Cutter Davila one. The girlsâ€™ game with Hawley was not available at press time.
The Highland girls basketball team went to a neutral site â€” Water Valley â€” for a 61-30 win over McCamey on Monday.
Shaneese Brown had 19 points and five other play-ers scored as the Sweetwat-er JV girls basketball team improved to 10-0 by defeat-ing the Abernathy JV girls, 40-28, here Tuesday.
Trailing 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, Sweetwater outscored Abernathy 34-19 the rest of the way. Abby McPherson and Cierra Knox each had six points while Morgan Whitley had four, Maddie Jones three and Bianca Castillo two for Sweetwater.
With the month of Dec-ember almost here, the basketball tournament season is set to arrive as several Nolan County high school teams compete in three-day events starting Thursday.
The Sweetwater girls and boys are in Ballinger, while Blackwell hosts its annual Oak Creek Classic. Highlandâ€™s varsity boys and JV girls are also in Blackwellâ€™s tournament, while the Highland varsity girls are going to Bronte.

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Alicia Finn had a perfect shooting day from the field on Saturday against Trinity University when she made her debut for the Hardin-Simmons University girls basketball team, helping them to a 77-75 victory at Trinityâ€™s Thanksgiving tournament in San Antonio. Finn, a freshman, had four points in the game for the Cowgirls as she made her only field goal attempt in the contest and also sank both of her free throw shots.
Fredericksburg â€” Doris Lynn Brown Turner, 90, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, in a local nursing home. She was born on April 11, 1922, in Scranton, Texas, to Maggie Mae Bailey Brown and Ernest R. Brown and grew up in Colorado City. She married Veltie E. Turner on Jan. 3, 1941, in Colorado City and they raised four children in Roscoe.
Family visitation will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater on Nov. 30, from 1-2 p.m. and graveside service immediately following in the Roscoe Cemetery with the Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 30 calls for service, issued two citations and made no arrests on Nov. 26, 2012.
The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served one civil paper and made seven arrests on Nov. 26, 2012.

â€˘ Rosalio Gutierrez, Jr., 48, of Snyder â€”Â Warrants/surety withdrawal and violation of probation.

The burn ban for Nolan County was reinstated at the county commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, November 26, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The commissioners jointly discussed the idea on whether to leave the burn ban off, but then Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden--who was in attendance at the meeting--was asked about the overall outlook of the county. Madden stated that the weather outlook is projecting drier and windier conditions, leading the commissioners to make the decision.
