Bids to be obtained, presented at city meeting

March 18, 2013

At the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission meeting, several bids were discussed on items that are necessary for city operations.
Bids were opened and considered on AC10 asphalt and grade 4 crushed rock, which will be used in the 2013 street seal coating projects. Three companies submitted bids, which were reviewed by city staff prior to any action being taken.

Lota Bell Smauley Gent

Lota Bell Smauley Gent, 93, of Garland, went to be with her Lord and her loved ones on March 17, 2013, at Town East Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Mesquite.
Lota Bell was born on Feb. 2, 1920. in Fisher County to Ottis and Ida Mae Smauley. Her family grew up on a farm west of Roby, where she was one of seven children. She married Cecil Gent on May 10, 1944. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1993.

SW uses big inning to to win district opener

A flag honoring the 2012 Sweetwater softball team for making the playoffs was unveiled in a brief pre-game ceremony on Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Then it was the 2013 Lady Mustangs’ turn to make a impression, and they were up to the challenge in their District 4-3A opener against Snyder.
After falling behind 2-0, Sweetwater sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning against three pitchers and scored 10 runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead. After that, it was just a matter of bringing it home as the Lady Mustangs held on for an 11-8 victory.

Mustangs defeat ex-district foe in final tuneup for 4-3A

After a lackluster effort one day earlier at Lubbock Estacado, the Sweetwater baseball team got back into the win column at home Friday when it faced former district rival Brownwood.
The Mustangs got an ex-cellent pitching effort from sophomore J.P. Poe in their final non-district game in beating the Lions, 5-3, at Newman Park. They also overcame a shaky defensive outing as they had six errors in the contest.

Nolan VFD to host pancake supper fundraiser

Seriously...who isn’t a fan of breakfast for supper? If you’re in the mood for the morning meal in the evening, you won’t have to wait too long.
On Saturday, March 23, the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department will be having a pancake supper fundraiser. The event will be held at the Nolan/Divide Community Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
There is no set cost for the meal, as donations will be accepted. All of the items used during the pancake supper will be donated by Dewayne Morgan, and 100% of the funds raised from the dinner will be used for the construction of a new fire station.

Ordinances help city prepare for anticipated oil activity

Various ordinances were discussed at the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday. Many of the matters that have been and continue to be discussed are the result of the city making preparations for the anticipated activity from the Cline Shale oil development.
The second and final reading of the ordinance amending Chapter 19 of the city’s Code of Ordinances — entitled “Motor Vehicles and Traffic” — was approved, which prohibits the parking of recreational vehicles (RVs) in public streets, as well as other commercial and recreational equipment.

City ordinance for RV parks in the works

While no action was taken during Tuesday's city commission meeting, discussion was held on the criteria for a proposed RV (recreational vehicle) park ordinance.
A third rendition of the ordinance draft was discussed, which defines what classifies as an RV park, what an RV is and what amenities must be placed inside an RV park. Various other specifications were also noted, including individual utilities and hook-ups per vehicle.
