BALLINGER â The Highland boys relied largely on their defense to get them into the Class A playoffs this season. It wasnât enough, however, to overcome an anemic offensive effort in Fridayâs bi-district game vs. Robert Lee as the Steers built a first-half lead and held on for a 37-22 victory at Ballinger High School.
District 13-A, D-II runnerup Highland (15-15) held only one lead, 4-3, in the first minute of the second quarter. Yes, 4-3.

(West Texas) â Reality Education for Drivers will be at TSTC West Texas Campuses for their YOLO (You Only Live Once) campaign. The group is bringing awareness to the dangers of texting and driving. Seventy-five East Ridge students collected over $3,000 to donate to the American Heart Association during their recent "Jump Rope for Heart" event.

During the February meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, Eddie Brown stated in his monthly City Manager's report that Code Enforcement and building inspections have show an increase in activity, as oil-related business continues to expand. Seeing the most growth has been Bradford Lane and Interstate 20.
A multitude of information has been presented during the Cline Shale meetings held in surrounding counties for the past few months, in which the February meeting was held in Colorado City.
"We don't know what to expect," said Brown in regards to change.
Mayor Greg Wortham, SEED Executive Ken Becker, SEED Marketing Dir. Kirstin Smith, and Jeff Howard from TSTC joined more than 100 people representing cities in the Texas Midwest region in Austin on Feb. 5th participating in âTexas Midwest Day at the Capitolâ. Representatives for the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup were at the Capitol promoting the annual event and were able to take time to join the TMCN group for photos.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 150 calls for service, issued nine citations and made 10 arrests from Feb. 15-18, 2013.
The SPD received 60, 911 calls.

Funeral services for Wynona SoRelle Pickett, 86, of Sweetwater, will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Mike Crowley officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Pickett died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, in Sweetwater.

Highland basketball fans will get a double treat today as both of its teams have Class 1A, Division II playoff games that will be held at Ballinger High School.
Highlandâs girls begin the doubleheader by taking on Water Valley at 6:30 p.m. in a regional quarterfinal. Highland advanced by beating Zephyr 48-29 in its area playoff this past Friday. Sierra Allen had 16 points and Hannah Allen 11 to pace the 13-A, Division II champion Lady Hornets, who had a first-round bye.
Highland is 28-4 for the season, while Water Valley, the runnerup in 14-A, Division II, is 25-5 overall.
