On Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at about 12:25 a.m. officers with the Snyder Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of 26th Street in reference to a call of shots fired in the area. Cpl. Darrell Campbell and Officer Lee Ortiz responded to the area where they made contact with several individuals in a front yard of 700 26th Street. While speaking with the subjects a male who was at the residence who has not been identified produced a weapon and shot Cpl. Campbell then confronted Officer Ortiz. Officer Ortiz and the male were involved in a shooting and the male was killed at the scene.
Smoke filled the Sweetwater sky and could be seen by other cities yesterday due to a fire that began near Lake Sweetwater. According to the Texas Forest Service, the fire was a complex of two lightning-caused fires that burned together and encroached on the city limits of Sweetwater. Hundreds of homes were threatened with 30 being evacuated. Those evacuated are now back in their homes and no homes were lost to the blaze.

Residents from Stamford and activist organizations from around the state were in Stamford on Monday for a Q&A session with Tenaska.
Tenaska is planning to build a power plant that will run on coal. The catch? The plant requires millions of gallons of water to operate.
Tenaska has gone to several cities to get the water they need, most have turned them away.
Stamford has entertained the idea and could decide to provide the water they need to run the plant. But it all comes at a cost, for both the residents of Stamford and Tenaska.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 178 calls for service, issued nine citations and made 12 arrests from July 8-10, 2011.
The SPD received 80, 911 calls.

According to the Texas Forest Service, the Nolan County Complex Fire is burning southeast of Sweetwater along FM 1856; it is traveling north. An estimated 500 acres and five homes are threatened. Several Volunteer Fire Departments and Sweetwater Fire Department are battling the flames as well as air tankers and forest service ground support. This started out as two seperate fires that joined into one.
Amy Nixon was named the Teacher of the Year at Southeast Elementary School.
Amy Nixon is a first grade teacher at Southeast Elementary. She has taught three years at Sweetwater ISD, with a total of eight years of teaching under her belt.
Nixon attended Angelo State University from August 1999 through May 2003 and earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies and Mathematics.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds producers that the annual crop certification deadline for spring-seeded crops is July 15, 2011.
Producers who file accurate and timely reports for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage can prevent the potential loss of FSA program benefits.
"I encourage all producers to visit the Nolan County FSA office to file an accurate crop certification report by the July 15 deadline in order to comply with FSA program eligibility requirements," said Cumbie

A Plowboy Football Camp in Roscoe led by the Roscoe football coaching staff will be held Monday through Wednesday, July 18-20 at the Roscoe practice field.
The camp is for students entering grades 2-9 and is from 9-11:30 a.m. each day. Registration for the camp begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18 at the Roscoe practice field. Pre-registration is encouraged to help with ordering camp T-shirts. The $25 cost includes a T-shirt.
The 2011 Mustang Foot-ball Camp has been scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, July 18-20 at Mustang Bowl.
The camp will be for students who are entering grades 4-9. The hours for this year’s camp are 6-8 p.m. each day. Registration for the camp begins at 5:40 p.m. on Monday, July 18 and no pre-registration is necessary. The cost is $30. Checks should be made payable to Mustang head football coach Craig Slaughter.
