Five of the top basketball honors in District 13-1A, Division II have been given to Nolan County athletes.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Dana Hohn and Roscoeâ€™s Ashley Lara qualified for state competi-tion at their regional powerlifting meets last weekend.
Hohn, competing in the 165-pound class, lifted a total of 775 pounds for a second-place finish at the Region I, Division II girls meet in Fort Stockton.
Deâ€™andre Gatson tripled jump 43 feet, 5 3/4 inches and was the only first-place medalist for Sweetwater at its Rattlesnake Relays track meet this past Friday.
The Sweetwater boys had 39 points in their division and also got a second-place finish from their 400-meter relay (43.85). For the Sweetwater girls, who had 30 points, Abby Garcia fin-ished second in the high jump (4-9) to garner the best individual finish at last weekâ€™s meet.
The Sweetwater boys golf team shot 345-340-685 this past week for a 12th place finish at Andrewsâ€™ two-day tournament. A total of 23 teams competed.
It was the first time that Sweetwater had beem able to field a complete boys team for both rounds of a tournament. Mason Andrews was 12th out of 117 medalists in the field after firing rounds of 77 and 80 for a 157 total. Michael Hazard shot 85-79-164; Michael Hunt, coming off an eighth-place finish at the Region 1-3A preview in Lubbock, shot 83-88-171; and Jeremy Witt shot 100-93-193. Mark Lawrence shot a 104 on Saturday.

Terry's Homemade Ice Cream and Italian Ice has re-opened their doors for the warmer season. The business offers homemade ice cream and Italian ice made right in the shop, located at 109 Locust Street (the blue building behind the Texas Theater). The shop first opened on Labor Day weekend last year. Terry's is owned and operated by Terry and Carol Frye of Sweetwater. Karen Peyton is the store manager with Mikeilah Foust helping out as well.

Highland ISD has qualified four students for the 2013-2014 UIL State Cross-Examination Debate Meet to be held on March 10-11 at the University of Texas in Austin.
Qualifiers include First place winners, Junior Teammates Taylar Hammond and Kevin Pantoja; and second place winners, Freshmen Teammates Kellse Cornett and Cheyanna Petty.
The Texas Primary election was held yesterday, with 1,635 ballots being cast in Nolan County. From that total, 1,171 ballots were from the Republican party, with 464 from the Democratic party.

Funeral services for Bobbie Lucille (Davenport) Strother, 82, of Roscoe will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Roscoe. Rev. Adam Davis will officiate and interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Strother died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
She was born June 8, 1931 in Roscoe. She married D.C. Strother on July 20, 1947, in Breckenridge.
