A lot of good high school basketball is being played these days in an eight-mile stretch of Nolan County.
As a result, basketball fans in Roscoe and Highland are getting the chance to cheer today for both of their teams in playoff doubleheaders that are being held in Bal-linger and Tuscola Jim Ned, respectively.
For the girls teams, a win today puts them in the Region II-1A, Division II tournament that will be held starting Friday at Abil-ene Christian University.
ABILENE â€” It didnâ€™t take too long Friday for visiting Sweetwater to put runs on the scoreboard in its 2014 baseball season opener at Abilene Cooper.
Thanks to a four-run sec-ond inning, the Mustangs were enjoying what looked like a comfortable 4-0 lead over the Cougars. However, Cooper fought its way back and eventually overtook Sweetwater for a 6-4 win.
The Cougars completed their rally with a three-run sixth inning that wiped out Sweetwaterâ€™s 4-3 lead.
The Sweetwater High School girls golf team won first place among Division II teams at the Snyder tournament held this past weekend. The teamâ€™s two-day score of 810 gave them a 21-shot win over Big Springâ€™s 831 total, while Graham placed third with an 832.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association will be issuing â€śarrest warrantsâ€ť for many executives and community leaders in Sweetwater, Colorado City, Roscoe, Loraine and other surrounding areas on Wednesday, Feb. 19.Â As members of the areaâ€™s â€śMost Wantedâ€ť these jailbirds are going to be â€śLocked Upâ€ť to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the families they serve.Â They have all been charged with having a big heart and are heavily armed with kindness! Their sentence is to serve one hour of â€śhard timeâ€ť at MDAâ€™s jail site, the Sweetwater Fire Station, between the hours of 10 a.m.
The city of Sweetwater will remain in Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency and Water Conservation Program, as noted at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.
City Manager Eddie Brown reviewed the quarterly assessment of the Oak Creek Reservoir and city's well field system, in which the recommendation to remain in Stage 1 was given by Enprotec/Hibbs and Todd. Brown explained that because not as much water is sold this time of the year, a change in stage would not be necessary.
The 2014 Miss Snake Charmer Tea was held at Java Jax on Sunday, Feb. 16. Ten contestants will be competing for the title of Miss Snake Charmer 2014. Graveside services for Anna Fern Hoover Eiland, 80, of Palava, will take place at 1 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Palava Cemetery with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Eiland died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Rosa Maria Berain Flores, age 90, of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Her body will be cremated. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Earl Woodrow Whittington, 95, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 in Weatherford, TX. He was a Sweetwater resident. Graveside services will be held at Roscoe Cemetery in Roscoe.
