BNSF Logistics Center to support Permian Basin oil boom

Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railway (BNSF) celebrated the official announcement of what will soon be a $28 million expansion to its Sweetwater facility Thursday with a ribbon cutting and luncheon.

United Way hosts Loyal Contributor’s Luncheon

The annual Nolan County United Way (NCUW) Loyal Contributor's Luncheon was held on Wednesday at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in an effort to recognize local businesses who give to the organization, as well as the agencies supported by the program.

Naomi Moore

Naomi Moore, 74, of Midland, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014. No services are planned.
Survivors include daughter, Sherry Pilisko of Round Rock; brother, Daryl Johnson of Lucas; and brother, William Johnson.

Blackwell rips Trent to win title

BLACKWELL — They’re back — once again.
Just three years ago, the Blackwell football team was winless on the field and the program’s future was un-clear. But after a 60-6 rout of Trent on Thursday, the Hornets are District 7-1A, Division II champs — it’s their second straight title — and headed to the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Highland defeated by No. 2 Ira

IRA — Ira is the champ-ion of District 7-1A, Div. I after a 62-14 win over High-land on Thursday.
Ira (10-0, 3-0) held High-land (4-5, 2-1) to 163 yards and two scores in the regular season-ending game, which ended on the 45-point mer-cy rule with 5:37 left in the third quarter.

Today, November 7, Avondale Baptist Church will have a large garage sale through Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.
All proceeds of this event will go to the Building for Christ at ABC fund to re-pave the parking lot and build a retaining wall on the south side of the building. There will be lots of items for sale.

Today will be mostly sunny with a high near 69. Winds will be breezy and from the south-southwest at 15 to 20 mph.
Expect mostly clear skies tonight, with a low around 47 and southern winds at 10 to 15 mph. Winds will shift to the northwest after midnight.
Saturday's forecast will almost be a repeat of Friday, but a slight warmup will arrive on Sunday with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Breezy winds will decrease on Saturday night, but crank back up again throughout Sunday.

Glenda “Coco” Ruth Wilson Johnson

Glenda “Coco” Ruth Wilson Johnson, 63 of Sweetwater, passed away Oct. 29, 2014. Glenda was born in Sweetwater on March 4, 1951, the eighth of nine children born to Aaron and Willie Mae Wilson. She graduated from Sweetwater High School and went on to continue her education at Texas Southern University. Glenda was homemaker and a lifelong member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Sweetwater until the church’s closing in 2012.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ethel Mae Felder. 

Freddie J. Schubert

Freddie J. Schubert, age 74, of Longworth, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 at Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014 at Longworth Cemetery with Rev. Jake Wade officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Freddie Jerrald Schubert was born in Sweetwater on Jan. 2, 1940 to Carl Richard and Mona Faye Woodward Schubert. He married Velma Louise Parker in 1962 and raised five children.

Donny Reeves

November 6, 2014

Funeral services for Donny Reeves, 73, of Sweetwater, will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Sweetwater with Tique Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Reeves died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
