Mustangs fall back to 4th-place tie

BIG SPRING — Falling behind early has been common for Sweetwater’s baseball team since district play began. It happened again Friday as Big Spring led 3-0 after two innings and 4-0 after three. The Mustangs got one run back in the fifth and scored two more runs to make it 4-3 in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer as Big Spring held on for a 5-3 victory over Sweetwater.
The Mustangs fell to 3-4 in district, with a more im-pressive 16-7 overall record, and are now tied for fourth place with Monahans with only three games left in the regular season.

7-run inning defeats Lady Mustangs

BIG SPRING — Despite out-hitting Big Spring 7-5 on Friday, Sweetwater fell to the Lady Steers, 7-1 ­— all of the runs scoring with two outs in the fourth inning.
Sweetwater scored its run in the fifth inning on two-out singles by Abby Garcia and Megan Holsey, but was unable to do more damage on the scoreboard. Garcia stole second before Holsey’s hit, then beat the throw to the plate to make it 7-1.

SW teams pay visit to B-Spring

The Sweetwater baseball team ended its losing streak with a 5-1 win here Tuesday over Greenwood, while the Sweetwater softball team had its best offensive effort in district play despite falling to 0-7 in a 15-11 loss to Greenwood.

4-3A track to wrap up today

Advancing to area competition will be the goal for Sweetwater athletes today as the District 4-3A track meet, which began Monday, ends its two-day run in Big Spring. A top-four finish is needed to qualify for the area meet in Pecos, which will be held April 18.
Sweetwater’s Cierra Knox qualified for area Monday with a fourth-place finish in the girls shot put (30-9), and Sweetwater’s De’andre Gatson was fifth in the boys triple jump (40-0 3/4).

Regional golf qualifier

Hunt shot a 228 total for his three rounds to qualify for Region I-3A tournament, which will be held April 14-15 at Lubbock’s Shadow Hills course.

Michael Hunt of Sweet-water will make his first trip to regionals next week after shooting his best round of the District 4-3A golf tour-nament Tuesday while play-ing on his home course.
After shooting 77s in the first two rounds of the tour-nament, Hunt carded a 74 in his final round — which was played at Sweetwater Country Club — to finish fourth among district medalists with a 228 total.

Mustangs win 5-1, end 3-game skid

A great pitching effort and timely hitting Tuesday allowed Sweetwater to end its three-game losing streak by beating Midland Green-wood, 5-1, here Tuesday.
Sweetwater (3-3, 16-6) solidified its sagging playoff hopes out of District 4-3A by moving within a game of Snyder and Big Spring, who are both 4-2 and tied for second place after the Steers — once 0-2 — won their fourth straight Tuesday by beating the Tigers, 9-5. The Mustangs also moved ahead of Monahans (2-4), which lost 14-4 Tuesday to first-place Wylie, which is 5-1.

Lady ‘Stangs lose wild one to Rangerettes

Enjoying a 7-5 lead after five innings, the Sweetwater Lady Mustang softball team seemed headed for its first district win of the season when it faced second-place Midland Greenwood here Tuesday. But Greenwood ruined the celebration with a 10-run assault in the last two innings to beat Sweet-water, 15-11.
Greenwood which trails first-place Snyder by two games, improved to 5-2 in district play and 12-12 over-all. Sweetwater, despite by far its highest-scoring game in district play so far, fell to 0-7 and 9-13.
