SW team to resume playoff run

The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League foot-ball team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated Abilene’s Jets 41-6 this past weekend and have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers.
The winner plays either Abilene’s Cowboys or the Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to come watch as the Stam-pede (8-0), which has given up just 48 points all season, goes for the title. The team is coached by Sammy Alva-rez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez, Roger Rudel and Matt Figueroa.

ABILENE — Tickets for the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet to be held May 9 at the Abilene Civic Center are on sale through Friday, April 29.

Mustang seniors play final game

These eight Sweetwater High School seniors played their final game on Friday. From left are Sterling Reeves, Austin Burt, Tanner Crain, Cameron Fox, Connor Stafford, Larry Daniel, Kris Mayes and Brett Rivera. The Mustangs ended their season with a 5-4 win over Big Spring to finish 2-6 in district play.

Carrillo remains undefeated at UT

Kendal Carrillo, a former Sweetwater High School player, is still undefeated as a pitcher for the University of Texas baseball team after a win over Texas-Pan American Tuesday. Carrillo, a senior at UT, pitched a perfect eighth inning to get credit for the victory as the No. 7 Longhorns won 4-2. Carrillo, who is 3-0, has appeared in 20 games to share the team lead with a 1.25 ERA as a middle reliever, and batters are hitting just .195 against him this season.

Sweetwater’s JV baseball team defeated Big Spring’s JV, 10-6, in its final game Friday at Sportsman’s Park.
A triple by Anthony Pala-cios that drove in three runs was the big hit in a six-run first inning as Sweetwater never trailed in the contest.
The Mustangs also scored a run in the second inning and came up with its final three runs in the fourth to finish 4-4 in district play.
Five players finished with two hits — Palacios, Stephen May, Cole Maxwell, Brandon Howell and Joe Martinez. Howell was the winning pitcher.

Mustangs win their finale

BIG SPRING — After losing three straight games by at least seven runs, Sweetwater’s baseball team got a boost on Friday to end its 2011 season.
The Mustangs traveled to Big Spring and came back home with a 5-4 victory — its second over the Steers in District 5-3A play — as Sweetwater finished 2-6 in district and 12-16-1 overall under third-year coach Roland Herrera.

Owens goes to W-Valley; Shelton hired at Highland

Karry Owens, who earlier this year submitted his resignation as head football coach at Highland after 18 years, has accepted a similar job at Water Valley. His last day at Highland was on Friday.
Owens will be repla-cing Justin Esquell, who resigned after leading Water Valley to a 10-1 record this past season.
Owens’ replacement will be Jeff Shelton, who served as the head football coach at New Home the last two years. The Leopards were 5-5 in 2010. Shelton was also defensive coordinator for four years at Jayton, where he helped them reach the six-man state finals in 2006.

Mustangs finish year at B-Spring

Two teams who haven’t had much go right for them since the start of district play — Sweetwater and Big Spring — wrap up their seasons at 7 p.m. today in Big Spring with little more than pride at stake.
Sweetwater brings a 1-6 record into today’s finale, but the win came over Big Spring, which has yet to claim a victory in its seven district games.
The Mustangs won, 3-2, in Sweetwater on April 5 as Kris Mayes threw his second career no-hitter.
