A bad start was too much for the Sweetwater girls basketball team to overcome here Friday as they lost to Class 5A Abilene High, 55-36, at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater fell behind 18-4 after the opening quar-ter before tightening up on defense in the second period, when they held Abilene to just six points. But the Lady Mustangs still trailed 24-14 at halftime, and were unable to get any closer over the final two quarters.
Taylor McKoy scored 18 points for Sweetwater, but she was the only Lady Mustang to reach double figures in the contest as the team fell to 1-3.

The Lady Buckaroos finished the game with a 10-3 run, taking their first lead with 1:28 left while taking advantage of Sweetwater’s struggles at the free throw line. Talk about working overtime.
For some reason, that’s what the Sweetwater boys basketball team has to do when it faces Hawley.
