Fatal crash in Nolan County

November 30, 2010

One person was killed and one injured in a one vehicle rollover crash occurring at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010. The crash was one mile North of County Road 145 on County Road 147 in Nolan County.
A 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup, driven by Louis Dakota-Chance Green, 19, of Sweetwater, was traveling North on County Road 147. As the vehicle approached a steep dip in the roadway, Green lost control of the vehicle. The passenger, Hilton Dean Goff, 18, of Iraan, was ejected during the rollover.

Many participate in Run for the WASP

The National WASP WWII Museum hosted a 5K Run and a 1.2 mile walk to celebrate their freedom for Veterans Day 2010 called Run for the WASP.
On Saturday, Nov. 13, the National WASP WWII Museum honored the American veterans that have served their country and helped preserve the nation's freedoms. The course for the 5K run was around the Sweetwater Texas State Technical College campus and the walk started at the WASP Museum and ended at the WASP wishing well. The walk and run began and ended at the WASP Museum.

Calvin and Company to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly chamber coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Calvin and Company Real Estate, LLC, located at 1408 E. Broadway.

Meek Blood Center in need of donations

In light of the upcoming holidays, the Meek Blood Center in Abilene is in need of any and all blood donors. However, the blood center has a current shortage of type O negative.
Francis Baker is the donor recruiter with the Meek Blood Center. She said that only six percent of the population has type O negative blood. "It is the universal donor, and we have to have a certain amount of it on hand," Baker noted.

Goodfellows toy drive set for Dec. 4

Sweetwater Goodfellows work hard every year to provide toys and food for people in Nolan County that need assistance during the Christmas season. For the past 81 years, the Goodfellows have been spreading Christmas cheer to local families in need; this year, they are expanding that area and including all of Nolan County. Instead of only serving Sweetwater, they will now be taking on Roscoe, Maryneal, Nolan and Blackwell. Last year, the Goodfellows helped out almost 1,000 individuals between the 889 individuals signed up for Goodfellows and the 103 nursing home residents receiving sweatshirts.

Sweetwater Christian students learn about sharing

Sweetwater Christian School students fill boxes for those less fortunate. The children have been learning about sharing during the Thanksgiving season.

SMS coaches named Funderwear winners

Sweetwater Middle School coaches, Jill Locklar and Carla Lambert are the third Funderwear recipients for the 2010-2011 school year. Coach Locklar and Coach Lambert have Acquired the Fire by engaging, motivating and inspiring.
Their nomination stated, “They put in many hours to see that the Friday Night Fight would be a success. They went above and beyond by connecting with Snyder. These two very special ladies put their whole heart into their efforts and do not expect anything in return. They just want a cure for cancer, especially Jill who has beaten this disease twice.”

SEED receives wind energy expansion award

Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED), was recently honored as a recipient of the Expansion Solutions 2010 “Top Five” Award of Excellence in the Wind Energy category. Sweetwater, along with other Texas communities in Central West Texas and the Texas Panhandle areas, have become a hub for wind development and service companies. Sweetwater and Roscoe have been fortunate to have companies like EMA – Eletromechanics LLC, Upwind Solutions, GE Wind Center, E.ON, Invenergy, Bluarc, Wind Energy Turbine Services, KR Wind, Cranes Services, Inc., Altezza, Fasenal, Advanced Turbine Service

TSTC mobile wind training unit put to work

UpWind Solutions had the Texas State Technical College mobile unit on site as part of their ongoing employee training.
According to service area manager for UpWind Solutions, Bryan Gregory, training must be done annually and new employees go through a four day course.
A representative of Tech Safety Lines (TSL) and a representative of TSTC were on hand to assist with the training. Joe Don Dutton, a contract worker for TSL and Dallas firefighter and Glen Bedgood from TSTC helped with the rescue training.

WTxHITREC to help health care providers adopt e-records in West Texas

Under the nation’s new health care reform plan, all Americans must have access to electronic medical records, or e-records, by 2014. Doctors not using e-records will lose a percentage of their Medicare reimbursement fees starting in 2015.
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center F. Marie Hall Institute for Rural and Community Health has created the West Texas Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center (WTxHITREC) to help physicians and other health care providers across West Texas adopt and use e-records in their practices.
