Square dance classes to begin locally

Starting on Monday, Sept. 8, a new square dancing class will begin.
The class will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Jack Lambert Recreation Room, located at 604 Jack Lambert Drive in Sweetwater.
In square dancing, eight people work together as a team as they execute the choreographed routines timed to fit current-day popular songs.
Square dancing has been the National Dance for over 200 years and is the state folk dance of 17 states, including Texas. Couples, singles and teens participate in square dancing across the U.S. and internationally.

We have Sunday school for all ages every Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. Our Sunday worship services are at 10:50 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday evening prayer meeting is at 7 p.m. Our Wednesday evening service is an old fashion prayer meeting where we do nothing but pray for our community, church, nation and world. Avondale Baptist Church meets at 1405 Hoyt Street.

Chamber hosts luncheon for new Sweetwater teachers

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce held their annual New Teacher Luncheon on Thursday at The Center at the local TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus.
The new teachers were welcomed by Chamber President Zollie Steakley, who made some remarks along with Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman. Twenty-five new teachers were introduced at the gathering.
Three of the new teachers will teach at TSTC: Shannon Weir, Jerry Johnson and Joe Lucas. Within Sweetwater ISD, J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center will welcome Stephanie Harrell and Salvador Barrego.

Cloverton to perform at Emmanuel Fellowship

Leola Hartgraves Clark

August 15, 2014

Leola Hartgraves Clark, age 91, of Sweetwater, passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at Garden of Memories with Pastor Chester McCown officiating. Burial will follow.

Mustangs, area football teams to get their 1st tests

After nearly two weeks of hitting each other in prac-tices, the four area high school football teams finally get a taste of outside competition starting today.
In 11-man ball, Sweet-water goes to San Angelo’s Bobcat Stadium this evening for its opening scrimmage against San Angelo Lake View, while Roscoe is at home to take on Haskell. Sweetwater’s scrimmage is set to begin with the JV and freshman teams at 5 p.m., with the varsity taking the field at approximately 6:15, according to Mustang coach Shane Mobley, while Roscoe will begin its skir-mish at 6 p.m.

Plowboys introduced to public

This year’s Roscoe Plowboys football team was introduced during the school’s “Plowboy Preview” that was held Thursday night at Plowboy Field.
School cheerleaders and the Roscoe band also performed for the public. Roscoe hosts Haskell in its opening scrimmage today starting at 6 p.m.

Events set for this weekend

Tonight, August 15, Maryneal Baptist Church will be having revival services through Sunday the 17th featuring Billy Oliver with music by Randy and Vicki Hanes.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday's schedule will be 10 a.m. for Sunday School, 11 a.m. for morning worship, 12 noon for a lunch at the Community Center and a final service for 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the clothes closet at First United Methodist Church, located at 309 Cedar, will be open from 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. Clothes are free to anyone in need.

For the weekend, we should expect highs in the mid to upper 90s. Winds will mainly come from the south at 10 to 15 mph, and starting on Saturday afternoon, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms will remain in the area through Sunday evening.

Local employers have difficulty filling jobs

Nolan County has been virtually recession proof. As most of the nation has struggled to recover from the worst economic downturn in more than 75 years, Sweetwater and surrounding areas has remained a bastion of employment.
In fact, Ken Becker, executive director at Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED), estimates the percentage of Nolan County residents out of work to be just over four percent — lower than the state of Texas and the U.S. averages.
