Don was survived by his beautiful wife of 41 years, Linda Land; his mother Nona Land; sister Sandra; brother-in-law, Merrill; daughter, Donita Mattern; son-in-law and very good friend Dan Mattern; nieces, Kimberly and Phyllis; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Don was born to Nona and Shelby Land in Brownwood, Texas on Oct. 24, 1942. He was a very well-liked football player in Brownwood and Sweetwater. At the age of 18 years he bravely joined the Navy and married his first wife, Jean. Together they had their only child, daughter Donita, who was born in 1962.

After averaging eight runs in its first two district games and scoring 19 in an easy win over Crane on Friday, a high-scoring Sweetwater softball team entertained first-place Brownwood here Tuesday with a chance to really make a statement.
But the Lady Lions were the only ones scoring runs, while competely shutting down Sweetwaterâ€™s offense to win, 8-0, at the Jerry Collins Softball Complex.
Tuesdayâ€™s scheduled 7 p.m. District 5-3A baseball contest at Newman Park between Sweetwater and Brownwood was can-celled because of lighting problems at the park, according to Sweetwater coach Roland Herrera. The game has been rescheduled for today starting at 4:30 p.m.
Sweetwater brings an 0-1 district record into the game, which is the first of four consecutive district home games. Brownwood, the defend-ing District 5-3A cham-pion, is 1-0.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Sam Nemir and Ryan Linebaugh finished in 10th and 11th place, respectively, among Class 3A lifters in the 165-pound weight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division II meet that was held on Saturday in Abilene.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s girls golf team is in second place after hosting the first round of the district golf tournament on Tuesday at Sweetwater Country Club, although no Lady Mustang is currently among the top five medalists.
Sweetwater shot 370 as a team to outdistance everyone except Snyder, which shot 341 to take a 29-stroke lead in the 54-hole event, which resumes next Monday at Wylie.
Sarah Witt had Sweetwa-terâ€™s best individual round. Witt carded a 90, putting her in a tie for sixth place and nine out of the lead.
EARLY â€” Sweetwaterâ€™s Jayci Shelton won three events to pace the Lady Mustangs to a third-place finish at Earlyâ€™s track meet this past Saturday.

A few months ago, the Nolan County Sheriffâ€™s Office and the 32nd Judicial District Attorneyâ€™s Office conducted a raid of a residence addressed as 1110 Runnels Street in Sweetwater.Â Numerous arrests were made as a result of an investigation that lasted several months.Â This address was very well known in Sweetwater and Nolan County for the large amount of drug trafficking (primarily crack cocaine) that took place at this house.Â As a result, the house was seized and subsequently forfeited in 32nd District Court.Â District Attorney Ann Reed handled the forfeiture proceedings and the house was award
