Students enjoy train ride

October 13, 2011

Several third grade students from East Ridge Elementary and fourth and fifth grade students from Sweetwater Intermediate School were treated to a special train ride on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Only 90 students were permitted to ride, as space was limited. The students were drawn for having perfect attendance for the first six weeks. Union Pacific provided the train ride.

BEST Robotics competition to have practice day Saturday

Round two of the Big Country BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas.
Held in the Student Center, Practice Day will allow each team a chance to practice on the actual playing field, marking it as the first time the teams get to battle their competition.

SISD offers gifted education

Sweetwater Independent School District conducts a program for students with above average potential in academic and creative-productive thinking skills areas in grades K-12. This gifted education program is designed to challenge students to accelerate above and beyond the regular school curriculum.

Disaster recovery story featured at TMCN conference

What happens after a community is completely flattened by a tornado? How does the community rebuild? Where do you even start? It happened in Greensburg, Kansas in 2007 and the current Mayor of Greensburg will be the keynote speaker at the Annual Texas Midwest Conference to share the unbelievable story. Mayor Bob Dixson will have a message that every community leader will appreciate.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Oct. 11, 2011.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served one civil paper and made no arrests on Oct. 11, 2011.

Calls for service:
• Stray livestock — I-20 south service road.
• Medical emergency — CR 108.
• Close patrol — S. Blanco, Blackwell.
• Inmate transport/medical — E. Arizona.
• Suspicious vehicle — I-20 MM 241 west bound.
• Animal control — Ridge Crest Road.

Cora Lee Jernigan

Funeral services for Cora Lee Jernigan, 85, of Abilene and formerly of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Jernigan died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, in Abilene.

John ‘Juan” Lopez

Funeral services for John "Juan" Lopez, 61, of Sweetwater, will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Oct. 16, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Deacon Bill Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Pauline Gauna.
Lopez died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

Martha Ruth Light

Funeral services for Martha Ruth Light, 96, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at the Roscoe Church of Christ with Dan Boren and Doug Crum officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, from 6-8 p.m., at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Light died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

Mustangs face must-win vs. 0-7 Steers

Theoretically, Sweetwater needs to win two of its last three games to have a real-istic shot at the playoffs af-ter losing to Abilene Wylie 20-15 in its district opener.
And as far as Mustang head coach Craig Slaughter is concerned, the winning needs to start this Friday against an 0-7 Big Spring squad at Mustang Bowl.
How much urgency is there for Sweetwater?
